PolybutyleneThis is the light gray pipe used for many years in older homes until its tendency to split reached such a level that a class action suit was filed and now money is sometimes available to fix the problems it has caused. It was connected using a crimp system and no automotive hose clamp in the world can be fastened tightly enough to make a leak free connection. Not that it isn't tried on a regular basis. The best repair system I know of is the Genova union that will let you transition from poly to CPVC. They are hand tightened so you don't have to try and get tools into tiny spaces and I have never had one leak. |
