Information and repair tips

Copper was used in the more expensive homes because it lasts a long time, is not prone to failure and can be repaired relatively easily. It is important to remember to use lead free solder when working on copper lines and to be careful with the torch.

One peculiarity you may encounter is that copper will stretch significantly before it splits. This is great if you have a water line freeze and then unthaw without a rupture. However, if you ever have to repair that line, want to splice another line into it, etc. you may find none of the fittings you buy will work because the diameter of the tubing is no longer to spec. This can be extremely frustrating because the stretch may extend for several feet and will all have to be cut out before the new fittings will work.

I think copper has been largely replaced by PEX for new manufactured homes; regardless of price.
