Physical and legal safety issues

Roof work is dangerous. Roofing contractors have extremely high costs for workman's compensation because employees frequently have serious injuries. Homeowners get hurt too.

There are two related aspects to safety; legal and physical.

We live in a society where lawyers work on contingency and people are VERY willing to sue. If you hire an uninsured contractor to do work on your home and someone is injured on the job there will almost certainly be a lawsuit. Our legal system resolves disputes by determining what was legal, which may or may not be the same as what seems right to you!

Paying a neighbor kid to do work around your house is a time honored tradition with major benefits for both parties. Kids get a chance to learn how to work and make some extra money. Homeowners get odd jobs done affordably. Unfortunately, it also has major risks to your financial health. Your homeowners insurance may cover you, but who knows for sure.

The work itself is dangerous. The worker may be high above the ground on a slippery roof, he may be lying on wet ground near electrical outlets.

Ladders can be an issue. Since I was running a business and hate ladders I bought a really good one. I take it with me and if I need to get on a roof when I don't have it with me, I go home a get it before I risk using an inadequate one the customer may have.

It's terribly easy to get involved in what you are doing and back into or off of something.

In other words, be careful, plan ahead, use good equipment and take the time to think things through.
