How to use and where to buy

Peel & Seal™ is a new product which offers the potential of easy durable fixes to difficult mobile home roof repair problems. Read what the manufacturer has to say here, and then return to this page.

I have used the product on my own house and it is wonderful stuff. There is no mess, no tar on clothes and tools, quick and easy to apply, covers gaps to large for asphalt products, and promises to be long lasting. You can review the before and after pictures here.

The problem is cost. It runs around $1.25 per squre foot depending somewhat on what size you buy.My solution to cost is to use it as a patching material, not a roofing material. The manufactures literature, understandably, always shows it being applied as a complete roof. I use it to patch, which brings the cost within reason.

It comes in 6", 12", 18", and 36" wide rolls which are 33' long. I found the 6" roll to be great for seam patches and use around vents and other roof penetrations. I used the 18" for flashing at the edge of the roof. I found the 18" was awkward to use and think the 36" would be hard to use unless you are doing the complete roof (re-roofing, not patching).

I photographed a roof repair project using Peel & Seal as a patching material so you can see how it looks.

The roof you are working on needs to be clean and dry with the temperature above 60 degrees (F). Clean means no loose dust, dirt, gravel particles, etc. I swept with a stiff broom and that seemed to be good enough. If there is any flaking or peeling matierial, like last years rubber coating, you need to get that off with a very stiff or wire brush.

Warmth is important in helping it make a good bond with the roof. I was working on a metal roof with the sun going down and could quickly tell I wasn't getting the quality of adhesion I had been earlier when it was warmer. In my case I could warm the edges by pressing with my hands and that got the edge down tight. I presume sunshine and warmth the next day finished the process.

If you live in cold country and have to do a repair in the winter, this will be a problem. I haven't tried it myself, but under those conditions I think you might be able to dry and warm the area with a hair dryer(s) until it is warm enough for the product to stick.

Especially if there is ice or snow and it is very cold, there will be a temptation to do the drying with something more powerful than a hair dryer. A propane torch with a flame spreader or a paint stripping heat gun come to mind. You might want to make sure your fire insurance is paid up before you try that.

It cuts easily with scissors. I cut lengths the size I needed, peeled off the backing paper and pressed them into place. I used my hands and the back of the wood brush handlen to apply pressure. The aluminum layer on the top is easily damaged so you want to use a roller or block with smooth edges to press it into place.
